What it’s about. Der glücklose Zirkusdirektor Nick Coster erkennt das Talent des jungen Käseverkäufers Matt Varney, der einen ausgebrochenen Löwen allein mit einer Mistgabel in Schach halten konnte. Unter der Leitung des einstmals berühmten Dompteurs "Hoffmann, der Große" lernt Matt das Handwerk von der Pike auf. Als Hoffmann sich immer mehr dem Alkohol ergibt, wird er von Coster gefeuert. Matt nimmt die ihm gebotene Chance wahr, und schon bald wird seine Löwennummer die Attraktion des Zirkus. Der von Neid zerfressene Hoffmann kehrt darauf noch einmal zurück, um sich an Matt zu rächen, und wird im Verlauf einer Schlägerei von einem seiner eigenen Löwen tödlich verletzt.
