What it’s about. Nach dem Ende des Zweiten Weltkriegs zieht Stingo in ein neues Appartment in New York. Er lernt schnell die polnische Einwanderin Sophie kennen, die früher in einem KZ eingeliefert war. Sie wohnt mit Nathan, einem amerikanischen Juden zusammen und zwischen den Dreien entsteht schnell eine Freundschaft. Stingo fühlt sich immer stärker zu Sophie hingezogen. Auch wenn sich Sophie freundlich und gutmütig zeigt, wirkt sie auf Stingo immer sehr distanziert. Zudem ist ihm das Verhältnis zwischen Sophie und Nathan ein Rätsel. Ihm gegenüber verhalten sie sich normal, doch er merkt bald, dass die beiden weit mehr verbindet als bloße Wohngemeinschaft. Je näher sich Stingo und Sophie dann kommen, um so mehr erfährt Stingo von Sophies erschütternder Vergangenheit.
