What it’s about. Erster Weltkrieg. Der junge englische Leutnant Raleigh wird in die Kompanie des desillusionierten Hauptmanns Stanhope versetzt. Stanhope ist heimlich mit Raleighs Schwester verlobt und versucht daher das Bild des vorbildlichen Offiziers zu wahren. Ein Vorstoß gegen die deutschen Linien, an dem auch Raleigh teilnimmt, wird ein blutiges Fiasko. Raleigh kennt nun die Schrecken des Krieges, die auch Stanhope zermürbt haben.
