What it’s about. Fürst Dimitri Nechljudow sitzt bei einem Mordprozess auf der Geschworenenbank. Angeklagt wird eine Dirne, die einen Moskauer Kaufmann vergiftet haben soll. Bestürzt erkennt Dimitri, dass die Angeklagte seine Jugendliebe Katjuscha Maslowa ist. Vor Jahren hatte er sich während eines Sommerurlaubs in sie verliebt. Nicht wissend, dass sie ein Kind von ihm erwartete, hatte Dimitri dann die nicht standesgemäße Liaison beendet und Katjuscha nie mehr wiedergesehen. Die mittellose Frau verlor ihr Kind und schlug sich fortan als Prostituierte durch.
