What it’s about. Paul Kemp ist freischaffender Journalist in den 1950er Jahren und um einen entspannten Lebensstil bemüht – Er ist gut in seinem Job, aber gleichzeitig vollkommen antriebslos und nur an seinem eigenen Vergnügen interessiert. Darum kommt es ihm in The Rum Diary gerade recht, dass er für eine heruntergekommenen Zeitung im sonnigen Puerto Rico schreiben darf. Gemeinsam mit seinem neuen Mitbewohner Sala lässt er keine Gelegenheit aus, möglichst alternativen Freizeitaktivitäten nachzugehen, wie zum Beispiel mit Drogen zu experimentieren und Autos zu demolieren. Doch als die schöne Chenault in sein Leben tritt, hat Kemp plötzlich ein verlockendes Ziel in seinem chaotischen Leben, allerdings ist die mit dem erfolgreichen Sanderson zusammen.

How it landed. With an audience score of 5.9/10, The Rum Diary has drawn a solid, mixed-to-positive response. It went on to earn $24M at the box office.
