What it’s about. Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts: Die Wäscherin Gervaise, von ihrem Mann Lantier mit zwei Kindern sitzen gelassen, plagt sich mühsam durchs Leben, bis sie den fleißigen Arbeiter Coupeau heiratet und es zu einem bescheidenen Wohlstand bringt. Gervaise sorgt nun allein für die Familie und verzweifelt immer mehr an der Trostlosigkeit ihres Lebens. Als Lantier wieder auftaucht, wird sie erneut seine Geliebte. Doch die Verbindung mit ihrem Ex-Mann stürzt sie nur noch mehr ins Unglück...
