Released in 2012, The Act of Killing is a dokumentarfilm film directed by Joshua Oppenheimer, running about 115 minutes. “A story of killers who win, and the society they build.” — that tagline sets the tone.

What it’s about. 1965 wurden in Indonesien nach einem Militärputsch innerhalb eines Jahres eine Million tatsächliche und vermeintliche Kommunisten, kritische Intellektuelle und Chinesen umgebracht. Die Täter wurden nie bestraft und sind heute mächtige Personen in Gesellschaft und Politik des Landes. Teilweise werden sie sogar immer noch als Helden verehrt. Nicht wenige von ihnen sind stolz auf ihre Taten und sie prahlen mit ihren effizienten Mord-Methoden. So auch Anwar Kongo, der Protagonist dieser Dokumentation, der in Zeiten des Genozids vom Kleinkriminellen zum Führer einer Todesschwadron aufstieg. Als er vom Regisseur des Films gebeten wird, die damaligen Folterungen und Morde szenisch nachzustellen, ist er zunächst begeistert bei der Sache, sucht eifrig Schauspieler, feilt an Dekors, Kostümen und an der Umsetzung. Doch letztlich wird er doch nachdenklich und reflektiert seine Taten.
