What it’s about. Im Jahr 1945 - Auf der Philippinen-Insel Leyte tobt der Krieg zwischen Japanern und US-Amerikanern in seiner Endphase. Auf japanischer Seite sind nur wenige Soldaten übrig geblieben. Diese leben unter fürchterlichen Bedingungen, zum Teil kommt es im Überlebenskampf sogar zu Kannibalismus. Schließlich versuchen sich die geschlagenen Restbestände zum letzten verbliebenen Brückenkopf an der Küste durchzuschlagen, welcher noch in japanischer Hand ist. Private Tamura, einer dieser letzten Soldaten, versucht, auch weiterhin am Leben zu bleiben, ohne dabei jedoch seine menschlichen Ideale zu verlieren.
