What it’s about. Der Maschinenmeister Behnke ist ein politisch wenig interessierter Mann, der sich seiner Familie zuliebe mit der NSDAP arrangiert hat. Von seinem Schwager lässt er sich überreden, eine Druckerpresse zu reparieren, auf der antifaschistische Flugblätter gedruckt werden. Er nimmt einige der Flugblätter mit nach Hause – und wird von seinem eigenen Sohn Helmuth, einem überzeugten Hitlerjungen, an die Gestapo verraten. Nach Verhör und Folter kommt Behnke ins Gefängnis. Zum Kriegsende wird er von russischen Soldaten befreit. Doch seine Frau ist tot und sein Sohn befindet sich in Kriegsgefangenschaft. Als Helmuth eines Tages nach Hause zurückkehrt, vergibt ihm Behnke.
