What it’s about. Verena, die Mutter Oberin in einem deutschen Kloster, erzählt die Geschichte der jungen Nonne Antonia. Taub geboren und in jungen Jahren vom Kloster aufgenommen, wurde Antonia zur Schwester erzogen. Im Alter von 27 Jahren beginnt Antonia mit dem Pendeln zur Arbeit in einem Männerhaus in der Stadt. Dort trifft sie den hübschen Taschendieb Mikas, der ebenfalls taub ist. Mikas umwirbt Antonia und die beiden werden ein Liebespaar. Doch als Mikas auf tragische Weise von der Polizei getötet wird, beschließt Antonia, ihr Schicksal selbst in die Hand zu nehmen, und reist nach Amerika, wo sie Schauspielerin werden soll.
