Er erfindet sich einen imaginären großen Bruder und verbringt viel Zeit bei der jüdischen Nachbarin Louise, die eine alte Freundin der Familie ist. Sie erzählt ihm an seinem fünfzehnten Geburtstag ein streng gehütetes Familiengeheimnis: Sein Vater war vor dem Krieg schon einmal verheiratet und hatte einen Sohn namens Simon. Maximes Frau Hannah und Simon wurden während der Deportation der Juden aus Frankreich aufgegriffen und im KZ Auschwitz ermordet.
