What it’s about. Sylvia, die Tochter des Pfarrers Kelvil, ist Vorleserin bei Lady Patricia und lernt dort den jungen Lord Harford kennen. Sie lieben sich, aber der Standesunterschied verbietet eine Heirat. Es kommt zu einer scharfen Auseinandersetzung mit dem Vater, der daraufhin den jungen Lord ins Ausland schickt. Sylvia will man mit Geld abspeisen, ohne zu ahnen, dass sie bereits ein Kind erwartet. 18 Jahre später. Sylvia hat ihren Sohn so gut sie konnte aufgezogen, als Lord Harford, der neben dem Titel Lord Illingworth auch das gesamte Vermögen des Vaters geerbt hat, aus Indien zurückkehrt. Ohne es zu wissen, lernen sich Vater und Sohn kennen, geraten in Streit, und der junge Mann fordert ihn zum Duell.
