Released in 2009, Summer Wars is an animation and science-fiction film directed by Mamoru Hosoda, running about 114 minutes. “Always protect your network.” — that tagline sets the tone.

What it’s about. Als Kenji vom hübschesten Mädchen der Schule gefragt wird, ob er sie zu ihrer Familie begleitet, geht für ihn ein Traum in Erfüllung. Doch der Traum wird schon bald zum Albtraum. Natsuki hat ihm verschwiegen, dass ihre Familie riesig ist und er sich vor allen als ihr Verlobter ausgeben soll. Außerdem hat jemand ein riesiges Chaos im Internet verursacht - mit seinem Internet-Zugang! Verkehrsleitsysteme, Behördendaten, die komplette öffentliche Infrastruktur bricht zusammen und bedroht damit auch die reale Welt. Der unschuldige Kenji wird als Krimineller verleumdet, und bevor er überhaupt weiß, was los ist, wird er in eine Schlacht um das Schicksal und das Gleichgewicht der Welt gezogen.

Who’s in it. Summer Wars stars Ryunosuke Kamiki as Kenji Koiso (voice), Nanami Sakuraba as Natsuki Shinohara (voice), Mitsuki Tanimura as Kazuma Ikezawa (voice) and Sumiko Fuji as Sakae Jinnouchi (voice), among others.

How it landed. With an audience score of 7.5/10, Summer Wars has been warmly received by audiences. It went on to earn $18.4M at the box office.
