What it’s about. Die junge Bauerstochter Anuschka steht nach dem Tod ihres Vaters mit dessen Schulden alleine da. Um der Schuldnerin, einer reichen Bäuerin, mit deren Sohn Jaro Anuschka verlobt ist, zu entkommen, reist sie nach Wien zu Prof. Hartberg, einem Freund ihres Vaters. Bei diesem findet sie eine Anstellung als Dienstmädchen, wird aber schon bald aufgrund einer ungünstigen Verkettung von Umständen und Fehlanschuldigungen unrechtmäßig entlassen. Der Film beginnt tragisch, entwickelt sich aber im Verlauf immer mehr zu einer Verwechslungskomödie.
