Sie treffen im Flugzeug von Dakar nach Casablanca aufeinander: Der bekannte amerikanische Strafverteidiger Vandegrift, seine Tochter Jessie und der verhaftete Peter Roland, der 1928 in Stockford das berühmte Filmkind Binnie Casilla entführt und ermordet haben soll. Vandegrift, von Rolands Unschuld überzeugt, beschließt, den Mann bei seinem bevorstehenden Sensationsprozess zu vertreten. Doch gerade, als die öffentliche Meinung die Schuld Rolands mehr und mehr infrage stellt, sagt dieser unter dem Druck des Anklägers Adams aus.
