What it’s about. Vom 14. bis 20. August 1971 wurde ein soziologisches Experiment durchgeführt, bei dem männlichen Probanden per Zufallsprinzip die Rolle von Gefangenen oder Gefängnisaufsehern zugeteilt wurde. Geleitet wurde die ganze Unternehmung von Psychologie-Professor Philip Zimbardo der für das US-Militär die möglichen Ursachen von Konflikten in entsprechenden Wärter-Insassen-Konstellationen untersuchen sollte. Insgesamt 24 Personen nahmen daran teil, doch sehr bald zeichnete sich ab, dass sich die Beteiligten sehr viel mehr mit ihren Rollen identifizierten, als erwartet wurde. Seelische wie körperliche Folterungen waren die Konsequenz, die nicht nur von den Wärtern ausgingen. Auch die Häftlinge untereinander begannen, sich auf Geheiß der Aufseher das Leben zur Hölle zu machen. Das Experiment geriet außer Kontrolle und wurde vorzeitig beendet, nach nur sechs von 14 Tagen.
