What it’s about. Der invalide Bettler Porgy ist in das leichte Mädchen Bess verliebt, die sich jedoch lieber dem Rauschgift und ihrem Freund Crown hingibt. Nachdem Crown als Folge eines Streits einen Mord begeht und fliehen muß, sucht Bess Unterschlupf bei Porgy. Bald meldet sich Crown jedoch zurück und erhebt Ansprüche auf Bess. Er wird von Porgy getötet, der sich anschließend versteckt. Bess nutzt die Gelegenheit und folgt dem Drogenhändler "Sportin' Life" nach New York, wohin Porgy nachkommen will.
