What it’s about. Regisseur Yance Ford wuchs in Long Island, New York auf. Yance’ Familie, also Bruder, Schwester und Eltern verstanden sich gut miteinander. Man gab aufeinander Acht und führte ein Vorstadtleben, das aber getrübt wurde vom Rassismus weißer Nachbarn außerhalb der Enklave. 1992 wurde Fords Bruder William Jr. in einer Garage des Ortes von dem 19-jährigen Mechaniker Mark Reilly erschossen. Das Opfer war erst 24 Jahre alt. Vor der Tat hatte es Streit gegeben, die Beweislage war klar, aber trotzdem entschied eine Jury, dass es keine Grundlage gegeben habe, den Täter zu verurteilen. Zwanzig Jahre später beschäftigt sich Yance Ford für seinen Dokumentarfilm „Strange Island“ erneut mit der blutigen Nacht. Er zeigt eine nachlässige Ermittlung und legt bloß, dass die Behörden einem schwarzen Leben schlicht keinen hohen Wert zubilligten…
