What it’s about. Der rebellische Teenager Billy Wyatt kommt nach einem krummen Ding ins Bernville Camp, eine staatliche Korrekturanstalt für verhaltensauffällige Jugendliche, wo er auf zahlreiche Jungs trifft, die sich durch ihre Ethnien und Subkulturzugehörigkeit voneinander abtrennen. Der hochintelligente Billy geht schon bald auf Konfrontationskurs, nimmt die Schwachen unter seine Fittiche und entwickelt sich zum Wortführer der Jugendlichen. Ohne weiteres legt sich Billy mit Autoritäten an, womit er auch die Aufmerksamkeit von Anstaltsleiter Montgomery De La Cruz auf sich zieht, der beginnt, sich für Billys traumatische Vergangenheit zu interessieren. Billy baut derweil eine Beziehung zu der jungen Krankenschwester der Jugendstrafanstalt auf, während er versucht, mit sich selbst ins Reine zu kommen und zu sich selbst zu finden.
