Umrahmt von Szenen der formellen Unabhängigkeit Namibias als neu gegründetes afrikanisches Land im Jahr 1990, führt Desiree Kahikopos historische Romanze zurück ins Jahr 1963, kurz nach dem Aufstand von 1959 in Old Location – einem für schwarze Einwohner von Windhoek, der Hauptstadt Namibias (damals ein Gebiet Südafrikas), getrennten Gebiet. In dieser Umgebung trifft Sylvia Kamutjemo, eine schwarze Hausangestellte, bei einer routinemäßigen Sparbuchkontrolle auf den afrikanischen Polizisten Pieter de Wet. Während die beiden Briefe austauschen und sich die Geschichte einer verbotenen Liebe über Rassengrenzen hinweg entfaltet, erforscht Kahikopo eine unterrepräsentierte Periode der namibischen Geschichte mit Mitgefühl und Hoffnung.
