What it’s about. Gewalt explodiert in einem Südstaatennest in Georgia, als ein Schwarzer die Regeln des Geldverleihers Paris Trout (DENNIS HOPPER) nicht akzeptiert. In kalter Wut schießt Trout auf die Familie des Schwarzen. Als sich seine Frau Hannah (BARBARA HERSHEY) um die tödlich Verletzten kümmert, rastet Trout aus. Er demütigt und mißbraucht sie brutal. Die Situation spitzt sich zu, Trout wird des Mordes angeklagt. Ohne jegliches Schuldgefühl beauftragt er seinen Anwalt die unangenehme Sache aus der Welt zu schaffen. Je weiter jedoch das Ermittlungsverfahren fortschreitet, desto mehr kommt das Leben eines Mannes ans Tageslicht, der von Rassismus, Heuchelei, Gefühlskälte, Doppelmoral und Haß geprätt ist und weiter töten wird - auch Weiße.
