Ein scheinbarer Tag wie jeder andere endet in dem kleinen Südstaatenörtchen Fairfield in Angst und Tränen, als eine Bande Unbekannter auf offener Strecke einen Schulbus samt Insassen kapert und fünf verwöhnte Bürgerkinder in ein abgelegenes Versteck in die Everglades verschleppt, um dann von den Eltern einen Batzen Dollars zu erpressen.
