What it’s about. Im Jahr 1875 kommt Basil Ransome auf Einladung seiner Tante Olive Chancellor aus New York nach Boston. Dort lernt er die Frauenbewegung kennen, die kompromisslos für die Gleichstellung von Mann und Frau kämpft. Geistige Initiatorin der Bewegung ist Olive, der aber jedes Talent zur freien Rede fehlt. So bedient sie sich der jungen und attraktiven Verena Tattant, die vor ihren Auftritten von ihrem Vater Dr. Tarrant flammende Reden für die Frauenbewegung hält. Zwischen den beiden Frauen entwichkelt sich eine sehr intensive Freundschaft. Basil selbst ist ein Gegener der Frauenbewegung. Er verliebt sich jedoch in Verena und bedroht somit die enge Beziehung der beiden Frauen. Damit stürzt er die junge Frau in große Verwirrung...
