Mit einer Untersuchung, die er für sie vornimmt, diagnostiziert er, ohne es zu ahnen, ihre tödliche Krankheit. Als sein Freund David bei den Prüfungen durchfällt und das Studium aufgeben muß, wirft Joe selber alles hin. Erst die Nachricht von der Krankheit seiner Mentorin und ein Gespräch mit ihr bringen ihn wieder zum Studium. Noch vor ihrem Tod erweist er sich als der Mediziner, den sie in ihm erhofft hat und beendet die Abschlußprüfung so bravourös, wie sie es sich gewünscht hätte.
