What it’s about. 1915. Der Erste Weltkrieg hat gerade begonnen. Der grosse britische Schriftsteller Rudyard Kipling (David Haig) will unbedingt, dass sein Sohn John (Daniel Radcliffe) seinen Teil dazu beiträgt, im Kampf gegen die Deutschen, im Kampf um die Werte, die er selbst so öffentlich unterstützt. Doch John wird aufgrund eines Augenfehlers nicht zur Armee gelassen. Kipling lässt seinen ganzen Einfluss spielen, sodass sein Sohn doch in die Armee aufgenommen wird. Schnell schafft es der Junge, einen höheren Posten zu bekleiden und wird mit einer Ersatzbrille und der Erlaubnis seines Vater, dass er, obwohl noch nicht Volljährig, an die Front darf, nach Frankreich geschickt. Drei Wochen später, kurz nach Johns 18. Geburtstag, bekommt die Familie eine schreckliche Nachricht...
