Released in 2014, Automata is a thriller and science-fiction film directed by Gabe Ibáñez, running about 110 minutes. “Eure Zeit neigt sich dem Ende zu – Unsere beginnt jetzt” — that tagline sets the tone.

What it’s about. In der Zukunft steht die Welt endgültig am Rande einer ökologischen Katastrophe. Gleichzeitig ist die Menschheit so weit entwickelt, dass sie künstliche Intelligenzen und Roboter erschafft. Jacq Vaucan ist Versicherungsagent bei ROC, dem Konzern hinter der Schöpfung jener Maschinen, und untersucht routinemäßig einige Fälle von Roboter-Fehlfunktionen. Als er feststellt, dass diese auf mutwillige Manipulation zurückführen sind, stößt er auf Dinge, die das Schicksal der Menschheit verändern könnten. Was ist, wenn Maschinen sich selbst reparieren, ihre eigene Programmierung ändern? Es könnte dazu führen, dass sie auch ein eigenes Bewusstsein entwickeln. Doch diese Vorstellung ist für die Menschen, die mittlerweile von Robotern umgeben leben, derart beängstigend, dass entsprechende Gegenmaßnahmen unausweichlich scheinen...

How it landed. With an audience score of 5.8/10, Automata has drawn a solid, mixed-to-positive response. It went on to earn $6.2M at the box office.
