What it’s about. Devdas Mukherjee kommt als studierter Jurist nach 10 Jahren in seine Heimat Indien zurück. Dort empfängt ihn seine Familie sehr herzlich. Da aber Paro aus einer ärmeren, niedrigeren Kaste stammt, verweigern die Eltern von Devdas die Heirat und demütigen zudem noch Paros Familie. Paros Eltern entscheiden daraufhin, dass sie einen älteren reichen Mann heiraten soll. Devdas bricht seelisch völlig zusammen und verfällt dem Alkohol. Er zieht in das Haus der Prostitutierten Chandramukhi ein und vegetiert als Alkoholiker vor sich hin. Nur seine Gedanken an Paro halten ihn am Leben.
