In den 40er Jahren des 19.Jahrhunderts gilt Captain Harry Flashman (Malcolm McDowell) als Held des Afghanistankriegs der Briten, obwohl er eigentlich ziemlich feige ist und seine Reputation mehr oder weniger erschwindelt hat. Während er seinen Weg "nach oben" zu machen bemüht ist, entwickelt Otto von Bismarck (Oliver Reed), der ihm übel nimmt, daß Flashman wie er ein Verhältnis mit Lola Montez (Florinda Bolkan) hatte, einen perfiden Plan mit dem intriganten Rudi von Sternberg (Alan Bates), um Flashman in Ungnade fallen zu lassen. Dazu überzeugen sie den Helden, als preußischer Kronprinz die Herzogin Irma (Britt Ekland) zu ehelichen. Tatsächlich kommen die beiden sich näher, doch als Harry das Komplott gegen ihn durchschaut bleibt ihm nur die Flucht quer durch Europa...
