Released in 1969, Topas is a thriller and drama film directed by Alfred Hitchcock, running about 127 minutes. “Hitchcock takes you behind the actual headlines to expose the most explosive spy scandal of this century!” — that tagline sets the tone.

What it’s about. Michael Nordstorm hat die heikle Aufgabe, einen Oberst des KGB, der 1962 als Überläufer in die Vereinigten Staaten eingeflogen wird, dem amerikanischen Geheimdienst zu übermitteln. Zu seinem großen Entsetzen muß er feststellen, daß die Russen einen geheimen Ring hochkarätiger Agenten auf Kuba installiert haben. Dieser geheime Ring, der mit Decknamen TOPAS operiert, hat bereits begonnen, brisante Informationen der NATO an die russische Führungsriege des KGB über eine Basis in Paris nach Moskau weiterzuleiten. Einzig Nordstrom und seine französischen Mittelsmänner haben nun die Macht, TOPAS zu infiltrieren und zu entlarven.

Who’s in it. Topas stars Frederick Stafford as André Devereaux, Dany Robin as Nicole Devereaux, John Vernon as Rico Parra and Karin Dor as Juanita de Córdoba, among others.

How it landed. With an audience score of 6.0/10, Topas has drawn a solid, mixed-to-positive response. It went on to earn $6M at the box office.
