What it’s about. Der Literaturprofessor Jim Bennett hat ein echtes Problem. Seine Spielsucht bringt ihn immer wieder in äußerst prekäre Situationen, besonders wenn man bedenkt, wem er alles Geld schuldet. Seine reiche Mutter, die ihren Sohn längst abgeschrieben hat, ist da wohl noch das geringste Problem. Viel gefährlicher dagegen ist der Gangster Neville, der sein Geld mit Nachdruck zurückfordert und für den ein Leben nichts anderes ist als ein Pfand. Er begibt sich bald auf illegales und riskantes Terrain, um die zwielichtigen Persönlichkeiten, mit denen er sich eingelassen hat, auszutricksen. Das erregt schließlich auch die Aufmerksamkeit des Kredithais Frank, der ein fast schon väterliches Interesse an Bennetts Zukunft hegt. Doch inwieweit kann Bennett ihm wirklich trauen?

How it landed. With an audience score of 5.9/10, The Gambler has drawn a solid, mixed-to-positive response. It went on to earn $39.2M at the box office.
