What it’s about. Vera Brittain ist eine junge und unabhängige Frau, die gerade dabei ist, sich all ihre Träume zu erfüllen. Sie hat ein Stipendium für die Universität in Oxford bekommen und will englische Literatur studieren. Dort lernt sie den Freund ihres Bruders und zukünftigen Verlobten Roland Leighton kennen. Unfähig daheim zu bleiben und untätig auf die Rückkehr der Männer zu warten, entschließt sie sich, selbst zur Front aufzubrechen, um als Krankenschwester zu arbeiten. Dabei wird der Krieg Vera noch vor viele Bewährungsproben stellen und sie mit einigen schmerzvollen Schicksalsschlägen konfrontieren.
