What it’s about. König Rudolf von Habsburg stirbt im Juli 1291 und hinterlässt die Täler um den Vierwaldstättersee in einem Machtvakuum. Der neue despotische Landvogt namens Gissler zeigt sich als Tyrann. Gedemütigt und beraubt, findet sich Tell inmitten der Politik wieder, in die er sich nicht einmischen wollte. Der geplante Aufruhr durch den örtlichen Adel ist vom Tisch, nachdem dieser von Gissler gekauft wurde. Dies veranlasst Tell, eigenmächtig zu handeln. Im Dezember 1291 endet die Sage mit Blutvergießen.
