What it’s about. Das Show-Boat "Cotton Blossom" ist ein großer Schaufelraddampfer im 19.Jahrhundert, der auf dem Mississippi die große Musicalattraktion ist. Als der große Star der Show Julie Laverne mit ihrem Mann Steve Baker von Bord verwiesen wird, weil herauskommt, daß sie ein Mischling ist und Hochzeiten zwischen den "Rassen" im Süden verboten sind, wird die Tochter des Captains, Magnolia Hawk der neue Gesangsstar. Sie verfällt schon bald dem Spieler Gaylord Ravenal den sie gegen den Willen ihrer Mutter dann auch heiratet. Doch der Traum zerplatzt an Gaylords Spielsucht und er verläßt die Schwangere schließlich, ohne zu wissen, daß seine Frau schwanger ist...
