What it’s about. Vikingerführer Valgard liegt im Sterben. Er wurde bei der letzten Schlacht von seinem Erzfeind Ketil zu schwer verwundet. Nun wäre sein Sohn Kjartan an der Reihe sich Ketil zu stellen. Doch der ist noch nicht soweit, und darum verhilft ihm Valgard zur Flucht, um den berüchtigten Krieger Gunnar zu Hilfe zu holen. Schwer verwundet findet ihn ein Bauer, der Kjartan gesund pflegt. Seine Tochter verliebt sich sofort in den Wikinger, doch sie wird gegen ihren Willen mit einem anderen verlobt.
