What it’s about. Im Schattten der brutalen Morde des Jack the Ripper stehen die Psychologen des 19. Jahrhunderts vor der Frage, was einen Menschen zu solch bestialischen Taten bewegt. Im Jahr 1896 wird schließlich auch Manhattan von einer blutigen Mordserie heimgesucht, bei der Kinder armer Migranten regelrecht abgeschlachtet werden. Als ein junger Stricher brutal verstümmelt aufgefunden wird, beschließt der New Yorker Polizeichef Theodore Roosevelt, den umstrittenen Psychologen Dr. Kreizler, den Illustrator John Moore und die Sekretärin Sara Howard abseits des Polizeireviers in dem Fall ermitteln zu lassen. Denn Roosevelt fürchtet aufgrund der prekären Umstände und Kreizlers umstrittener Psychologie ein politisches Debakel.
