Kapitän Mitchell, erfolgreich und beneidet, setzt eine teure Rettungsaktion in Gang. Es gelingt ihm, eine Katastrophe abzuwenden und die Passagiere und das Schiff in Sicherheit zu bringen. Doch der Reeder hält die Aktion für überzogen, nennt Mitchell einen Feigling und feuert ihn. Seine Karriere scheint beendet. Als sich auch seine Freunde und seine Verlobte über ihn lustig machen, ersinnt er einen raffinierten Racheplan.
