What it’s about. Saigon 1952: Der englische Journalist Thomas Fowler ist hier, um als Korrespondent einer großen englischen Zeitung, über den Indochinakrieg zu berichten. Hier hat Fowler auch die Vietnamesin Phuong kennen und lieben gelernt. Eine Heirat kommt aber leider nicht in frage, da Fowler noch eine Ehefrau hat, die trotz gescheiterter Ehe, sich nicht scheiden lasen will. Als der junge US-Amerikaner Pyle auftaucht und Interesse an Fowlers geliebte Phuong zeigt, verfolgt Fowler es mit wachsendem Ärger, wie Pyle sich um Phuong bemüht. Da ist es auch nicht sehr hilfreich, das Pyle das Leben von Fowler, bei einem kommunistischen Überfall, rettet. Durch bestimmte Informationen die Fowler zugespielt werden, kommt er zu dem Schluss, das Pyle für diverse Bombenanschläge verantwortlich sein könnte.
