Bei der Serie handelt es sich um eine Adaption des gleichnamigen Bestsellers. Chris (Kathryn Hahn) und ihr Ehemann Sylvere (Griffin Dunne, „House of Lies“) machen sich auf den Weg von New York nach Texas, in den kleinen Ort Marfa, in dem ein Künstlerinstitut jede Menge Freigeister anzieht. Dort hat Sylvere ein Stipendium bei Dick (Kevin Bacon) erhalten, einem charismatischen Mann, der sich auch als Sektenführer eignen würde. Die Ehe wird auf die Probe gestellt, als sie eine schwierige Beziehung zu dem egozentrischen Professor aufbauen, der somit zum Zankapfel wider Willen wird.
