Released in 2013, The East is a thriller and drama film directed by Zal Batmanglij, running about 116 minutes. “Spy on us, we'll spy on you.” — that tagline sets the tone.

What it’s about. Die frühere FBI-Agentin Sarah Moss arbeitet nicht mehr für staatliche Geheim- oder Sicherheitsdienste, sondern für die Firma Hiller Brood, einen privaten „Sicherheitsdienstleister“. Im Auftrag ihres neuen Arbeitgebers wird sie undercover Mitglied einer oppositionellen politischen Gruppe, welche anarchistischen Ideen anhängt und sich „The East“ nennt. Sie gibt vor, die gleichen Ansichten und Ideale zu haben und erschleicht sich so deren Vertrauen. Im Laufe der Zeit entwickelt Sarah jedoch immer mehr Sympathie für die Motive der Gruppe und dann verliebt sie sich auch noch in den charismatischen Benji. Dies führt dazu, dass Sarah sich zu fragen beginnt, ob sie ihre berufliche Tätigkeit bzw. die Erfüllung ihres konkreten Auftrages für sich noch moralisch verantworten kann.

How it landed. With an audience score of 6.5/10, The East has drawn a solid, mixed-to-positive response. It went on to earn $2.4M at the box office.
