What it’s about. Als der führende deutsche Widerstandskämpfer Kurt Müller mit seiner Familie nach Washington, D.C. kommt, merkt er bald, dass die Tentakeln des Nazi-Terrors sehr weit reichen. Lillian Hellmans Bühnenhit von 1941 hat auch in dieser spannenden Leinwandfassung nicht von seiner emotionalen und intellektuellen Kraft verloren. Wie schon in der triumphalen Broadway-Inszenierung zeigt Paul Lukas als Müller eine leidenschaftliche Darstellung. Bette Davis erkannte sofort die Bedeutung dieses Films und zeigt eine intensive Leistung als Müllers integre Frau. Lucile Watson spielt die selbstgefällige Gesellschaftsdame Fanny Farrelly und wiederholt ihren denkwürdigen Bühnenauftritt ebenso wie George Coulouris als verschlagener Erpresser.
