What it’s about. Paris in den 1940er Jahren: Arlette, eine junges Mädchen ohne Eltern, flieht aus einer Besserungsanstalt. Sie findet sich allein und ohne Geld in Paris wieder. Auf der Suche nach Arbeit geht sie zu Monsieur Aristide, dem Direktor einer Schule, der gleichzeitig eine ganz besondere Kunst lehrt: die des Taschendiebstahls. Arlette lernt schnell, doch ohne es zu wissen beklaut sie einen Botschafter. Als dieser Arlette dabei erwischt, zwingt er sie zu einem Handel: Unter falscher Identität soll Arlette ihn zu einem Ball begleiten und dem Attaché Pierre de Rougemont eine Taschenuhr stehlen.
