What it’s about. Im Jahr 1813 wird Giuseppe Verdi in der italienischen Provinz Parma als Sohn eines Schankwirtes geboren. Der wohlhabende Kaufmann Barezzi erkennt die musikalische Hochbegabung des Kindes und wird Verdis Gönner und später auch sein Schwiegervater. Nachdem in kurzer Abfolge Verdis Sohn, seine Tochter und seine Frau Margherita sterben, wird Verdis 1840 uraufgeführte komische Oper "Un giorno di regno" ein furchtbarer Misserfolg. Verdis Karriere scheint am Ende. Doch schon zwei Jahre später kann Verdi mit seiner Oper "Nabucco" einen grandiosen Triumph feiern. Er wird zum umjubelten Star in der Opern-Szene, die er danach fast 50 Jahre lang mit seinen Werken beeinflussen sollte.
