What it’s about. Gerhard von Scharnhorst, aus einer niedersächsischen Kleinbauernfamilie stammend, schlug die Militärlaufbahn ein und wurde ein bedeutender preußischer General. Zusammen mit dem Freiherrn vom Stein reformierte er das preußische Heer. Nach anfänglichen Widerständen fand dies auch die Zustimmung König Friedrich Wilhelm III. Die Handlung konzentrierte sich auf die letzte und wichtigste Lebensphase von Scharnhorst: 1806 bis 1813 mit allen Höhen und Tiefen, die dieser große Deutsche durchlebte. Erstmalig wird dem Leben der preußischen Reformer nachgespürt, die Zeit bis zur Volkserhebung 1813 und die russisch-deutsche Waffenbrüderschaft gegen Napoleons Besatzungsarmee vergegenwärtigt.
