What it’s about. Kanada in einem harten Winter, lange vor Kolumbus. Den Ojibwe-Indianern droht der Hungertod, denn das Wild ist rar, weshalb der Jäger Baluk vorschlägt, die Suche in Richtung Norden zu verlagern. Häuptling Chetoga folgt dem Vorschlag, sehr zum Missfallen des Medizinmanns Dagwan, der zu allem Überfluss mit Baluk um dieselbe Frau rivalisiert. Doch auch im kalten Norden ist kein Wild in Sicht. Dagwan macht Baluk für die Misere verantwortlich und schlägt vor, ihn zu opfern, um die Götter zu besänftigen. Die Lage erscheint auswegslos, als plötzlich aus der Ferne eine gewaltige Herde Karibu auftaucht…
