What it’s about. Dublin, 1963: Der bescheidene, freundliche Alfie Byrne arbeitet als Schaffner in einem Linienbus. Seine einzige Liebe gilt den Werken Oscar Wildes, aus denen er zur Freude seiner Passagiere während der Busfahrten vorliest. Seine homosexuellen Neigungen hält er geheim, deshalb hört seine Schwester Lilly auch nicht auf, eine Frau für ihn zu suchen. Als eines Morgens die hübsche Adele Rice in den Bus steigt, überredet Alfie sie, als Prinzessin Salome mitzuspielen. Carney, der die Aufführung finanziert, ist über die sexuellen Anspielungen in dem Stück jedoch entsetzt. Er versucht alles, um Alfie zu isolieren und die Aufführung zu verhindern. Immer weiter in die Enge getrieben, bekennt Alfie sich eines Nachts zu seiner Homosexualität und glaubt sich nun endgültig verloren...
