What it’s about. Zorg ist Schriftsteller und arbeitet in einer Feriensiedlung in Südfrankreich an einem neuen Manuskript. Eines Tages taucht die junge Frau Betty bei ihm auf und lebt fortan bei ihm. Nachdem die selbstbewusste Frau sein Manuskript gelesen hat, tippt sie das Handgeschriebene kurzerhand ab, um es an verschiedene Verlage zu schicken. Leider scheint zunächst niemand Interesse an seinem Buch zu haben und als sie schließlich umziehen, nimmt er einen Job als Klavierverkäufer an. Betty wird schwanger, verliert jedoch das Kind und damit ihren Halt. Nachdem ihr immer unkontrollierteres Verhalten in Selbstverstümmelung gipfelt, wird sie in eine Anstalt eingewiesen und für verrückt erklärt. Zorgs Buch findet schließlich doch einen Verleger, doch sein Schmerz um den Verlust von Betty lässt ihm keine Ruhe und so sucht er nach einem Weg sie aus der Anstalt herauszuholen.
