What it’s about. Im New York des Jahres 1954 wird der König von Brooklyn, Frank Minna, ermordet. Detektiv Lionel Essrog, der für seinen Freund, Mentor und Chef Minna nicht immer legale Aufträge übernahm, versucht den Mord aufzuklären. Der Ermittler leidet unter dem Tourette-Syndrom und somit unter unkontrollierbaren Muskelzuckungen und außerdem gibt er merkwürdige Laute von sich. In einem Nachtclub kommt Essrog auf die Spur von Laura Rose, einer jungen Frau, die Proteste gegen den Immobilienhai Moses Randolph anführt. Randolph lässt Stadtgebiete zu Slums erklären, damit er sie abreißen lassen und dort eine Schnellstraße errichten kann. Gleichzeitig schlägt und erniedrigt Randolph seinen Bruder Paul, der später die Seiten wechselt und Essrog in dem Fall unterstützt…
