What it’s about. Bereits im Alter von vier Jahren beginnt die in North Carolina geborene Nina Simone (Zoe Saldana) mit dem Klavierspielen. Später gibt die hochtalentierte Frau Unterricht, wodurch sie auch zum Gesang kommt. 1957 veröffentlicht sie schließlich ihr erstes Album, nur kurze Zeit später wird sie von ihren Fans als „Hohepriesterin des Souls“ bezeichnet. Doch im Leben der gefeierten Jazzmusikerin läuft nicht alles so rund: Sie flüchtet sich von Ehe zu Ehe, sucht ihre Bestimmung in Afrika und engagiert sich auch politisch. Für die Plattenindustrie gilt sie zunehmend als schwierig, denn zwischen ihrem Engagement als politische Aktivistin, ihrer Kunst und ihrer Familie leidet ihre Gesundheit stark. Eines Tages trifft sie auf Clifton Henderson (David Oyelowo), der ihr hilft, eine neue Stimme zu finden…
