What it’s about. In einem Dorf nahe Jerusalems soll Joel, der älteste Sohn des Rabbis Lamech, nach dessen Willen ebenfalls Gelehrter werden. Joel ist jedoch der Ansicht, dass er seinem Volk besser dienen kann, wenn er sich am bewaffneten Widerstand gegen die Römer beteiligt. Anführer der Bewegung soll ein neuer Prediger namens Jesus werden, der sich jedoch gegen Gewalt ausspricht. Als Joels Bruder Zadok bei einem Attentat auf den römischen Offizier Longinus getötet wird, beschützt Joel den verletzten Longinus und zieht sich dadurch den Zorn seiner Landsleute zu.
