What it’s about. Rose Bernd, eine hübsche, ebenso temperamentvolle wie sensible junge Frau, arbeitet als Magd auf dem Gutshof des wohlhabenden Christoph Flamm. Rose wird von dem Baggerfahrer Streckmann begehrt, einem Mann, der durch seine rohe, animalische Ausstrahlung eine seltsame Faszination auf die junge Frau ausübt, sie zugleich aber durch seine Gefühlskälte abstößt. Ganz anders der schüchterne Buchdrucker August Keil: Er liebt Rose und möchte sie heiraten. Doch sie weist ihn immer wieder zurück. Dem charmanten Christoph Flamm gelingt es schließlich, das Herz der jungen Frau zu gewinnen. Rose lässt sich auf eine Affäre mit ihm ein. Als der skrupellose Streckmann davon erfährt, beginnt er Rose zu erpressen.
